By means of collages created from various fabrics and beads, My Animal Book imaginatively presents 10 “critters”: a frog, fish, dog, rabbit, donkey, chicken, turtle, crocodile, butterfly and ant. The collages are mounted on a variety of brightly coloured cloth backgrounds with the book’s text being limited to the single word that identifies what each page’s collage is portraying. With the elephant found on the front cover and small images of a duck, scorpion, grasshopper, snake, wasp and pelican on the back cover, this little board book offers even more content, although these additional seven creatures are not identified by name. The materials chosen to create the various collages were well-selected in terms of texture, and, consequently, young readers will, for example, get a sense of the softness of the chicken’s feathers and the bumpy hardness of the turtle’s shell or the crocodile’s scaly back. A good home purchase as well as a fine addition to libraries serving the toddler set. Highly Recommended. Dave Jenkinson, CM’s editor, lives in Winnipeg, MB.
