excerpt:
It’s About Time is about more than just time. Together with Lily and Jacob, the two child character narrators of the book, readers are taken on a journey of exploring the concept of time and how to read a clock; how to make a pound cake and the time required; the days of the week; as well as the months and seasons of the year.
Estellon’s illustrations and vibrant colour choices in It’s About Time are functionally captivating and counterbalance the black text font and white background found on the majority of the pages. For instance, various colourful clock representations and the inclusion of comic-strip style illustrations provide opportunities for the reader to decipher the time that is being expressed and help communicate the concept of time for those who are unable to read the associated text. Estellon’s select coloured background pages add pizzazz to the book. It’s About Time is a book that is well-suited for both the classroom and home. While the large amount of text may seem daunting to beginning readers, the dialogue bubbles and illustrations assist in conveying the concept being explained. With the help of Lily and Jacob, teachers and parents alike can support their students/children in understanding the concept of time in its many configurations. Estellon’s clever and seamless transitions make for a real page-turning book. The tasty pound cake recipe, paper plate (clock) craft, and day of the week quiz are some of the amusing activities that will keep the reader from wanting to flip the page too soon. Highly Recommended. Kelsey Sukich is a recent graduate from the B.Ed. program at the University of Manitoba. She knows all too well the importance of understanding the concept of time.
