excerpt:
Gobbled by Ghorks is a “Creature Department” novel which features Elliot and Leslie and a group of creatures from DENKi-3000 who are headed by Elliot’s uncle, the professor. This cast of characters is trying to develop inventions which will help to battle their enemies, the Ghorks. In this adventure, the crew are off to Simmersville where the ghorks are threatening to do something awful at the annual food festival. The protagonists travel by Coleopter-copter, get locked in the dungeon and meet the fabled sixth ghork, Giggles. This crazy, rollercoaster adventure thrill ride is very suspenseful and would appeal highly to young boys who would appreciate the snot, the secret elixir and the food fight! The author creates a unique vocabulary which paints a vivid picture in the mind of the reader. Gobbled by Ghorks would be a great tool to engage a reluctant reader as the adventure moves quickly and takes some interesting twists and turns (sometimes literally). I can picture a family reading this book together cuddled up on a bed full of pillows… but just a word of caution: be careful because you never know what strategy the ghorks will use to achieve their ultimate goal! For young boys or girls who enjoy fantasy/sci-fi adventure, this book is.... Recommended. Janet Beauchamp, a high school teacher and teacher-librarian, is the mother of three girls and lives in L’Amable, ON.
