excerpt:
A little hare named Lily keeps hearing about a mysterious entity called "Winter", the imminent arrival of which is driving all of the animals in her forest home to act very strangely. Lily begins to worry - if Winter is coming, what should she do to prepare? Filled with information, including an extensive facts section at the end of the story, Winter's Coming could be a valuable resource for elementary school students discovering winter adaptations in the natural world. The lengthy text might be most suitable for older children for whom the picture book could serve as an engaging alternative to drier nonfiction texts. The real stars of Winter's Coming are Josée Bisaillon's mixed-media collage illustrations, which capture the rich beauty of the changing seasons and bring the little hare and her world vividly to life. Recommended. Jane Whittingham is a Children's Librarian in British Columbia.
