excerpt:
Do You Know Tigers? provides information about one of the world’s most fascinating mammals in a very entertaining way. Several factual sentences about tigers are written at the bottom of each page supported by humorous cartoon illustrations, complete with speech balloons and sound effects, at the top of the page. Award-winning illustrator Sampar (Samuel Parent) interprets the facts in such a hilarious manner that you need several minutes to appreciate all the humour in the illustrations. The anthropomorphized animals stand on two legs and speak in one-liners to each other.
On a more serious note, the final pages deal with the issue of why tigers are endangered: poachers and pollution threaten their existence at an alarming rate. There are only 1000 tigers left in India and three of the subspecies have become extinct. This information provides an excellent opportunity to enter into a discussion about how to protect tigers (and other endangered species) and how to deter poachers.
Highly Recommended. Claire Perrin is an elementary teacher in the Toronto District School Board.
