excerpt:
Judy Moody is not the kind of person who lets others get in her way, and that definitely includes her little brother Stink. With the annual Gobblers-A-Go-Go competition around the corner, Judy's confident she'll be bringing home the grand prize, a Thanksgiving turkey. She's so confident she's told her Grandma Lou not to buy a turkey. Her little brother Stink, however, isn't so sure Judy will win. Luckily, Judy's confidence isn't easy to shake! To keep Stink entertained while she practices, Judy suggest he participate in the peewee races, and be her partner in the Triple-Fun Relay. Stink thinks the idea's great until he realized Judy 'Bossy McBossy' is a drill sergeant! As with all siblings, Judy's ordering Stink around doesn't go over well, and brother and sister find themselves on a time-out in their bedrooms. After homework, and a sneaked call from Stink to Grandma Lou reminding her to have a back-up turkey on hand, Judy and Stink create a peace treaty promising good behaviour, including Judy's not bossing and Stink's not being annoying, signed to make it official. With good sportsmanship, and a pig dressed as a pilgrim that is accidentally set loose on the track during the big race, Judy wins the grand prize Thanksgiving turkey! And it's frozen solid. Judy and Stink's Thanksgiving may be turkey-less after all! Megan McDonald does an incredible job conveying the love and tension that exists in big sister-little brother relationships that readers will instantly connect with. No matter how annoying they find each other, even after Stink promises to not being annoying, Judy and Stink can always find a way to include each other in the fun. Their idea of 'fun' can be delightfully strange, such as when Judy lets Stink help her break the biggest wishbone in her wishbone collection to decide whether he should call Grandma Lou and warn her to get a backup turkey in case Judy doesn't win the Turkey-A-Go-Go grand prize. Peter H. Reynold's illustrations complement the story and add additional humour to the already comical storyline, including a cat named Mouse. Words can't do justice to the illustration of a princess and a pirate tripping over PeeGee WeeGee, the pet pig, dressed in his pilgrim best! Blended into the hilarious storyline are tiny nuggets of history: how Thanksgiving came to be, Sarah Josepha Hale, who write "Mary Had a Little Lamb", and even a bit about the first moon landing are tucked into this fast-paced book. The Wishbone Wish is sure to keep readers wondering what's coming next! Highly Recommended. Crystal Sutherland is a MEd (Literacy) and MLIS graduate and librarian living in Halifax, NS.
