excerpt:
A young girl and her grandfather tiptoe outside, and the pair head out on an early morning walk through the beautiful fields of Prince Edward Island. Although the sun is not up, nature is bustling with swaying dewy grass, seagulls swooping and gliding over the water, and the ocean gently splashing on the red shore. As the two walk, the sun starts to rise, and the sky becomes lighter. Following along a fence, they come to grazing cows and watch their mouths sway sideways as they chew and stare. The pair continue, "Down, down we go along the path, right down to the beach. The wind perks up and the waves go slurp - dash, burp – dash. We stand silently, Grandpa and I, and just take it in." Walking back to their home and to the busyness of the waking day, they stop to cherish their walk: "Outside the front door, we stop. Just to hold onto the stillness a bit longer. I squeeze Grandpa's hand. It's large and rough. And quiet." This beautiful story not only highlights the beautiful scenery of Prince Edward Island, but also the special moments shared and the bond between a grandpa and his granddaughter. The illustrations in Island Morning are soft yet eye-catching. A Governor General's Literary Award winning author, Rachna Gilmore has over twenty best-selling children's books and has earned multiple honours and awards. Her books are sold internationally and have been translated into over a dozen languages. Brenda Jones grew up in Prince Edward Island. She currently works as an artist at a Montreal animation studio. She has illustrated numerous children's books. Highly Recommended. Kaitlyn Vecchio is a children's librarian at the Prince George Public Library in Prince George, BC.
