excerpt:
I Want a Monster! is a bright and crazy storybook about a little girl who wants to get a pet monster because all of her friends have one. She quickly learns that baby monsters are cute but that, as they grow, they can get into a great deal of mischief and create some crazy experiences for their human family. The highlights of this book are definitely the bold and colourful illustrations and the creative vocabulary, such as long-footed plurps and mustachioed zups. While perhaps a little confusing for early readers, I Want a Monster! will definitely be a fun read with a parent or older sibling. The story, itself, is a crazy adventure, as I imagine life with a monster would be. If the reader wants an engaging picture book with a minimal plot, then this storybook fits the bill. My daughters really enjoyed the extra feature at the end of the book which walked them step-by-step through the process of ADOPTING A MONSTER. Step 1: Draw your Monster, Step 2: Name your Monster, etc. I Want a Monster! is a book that young children might read again and again as well as one they might use during arts and crafts time to design their own creations. Recommended. Janet Beauchamp, the mother of three girls, is a high school teacher and teacher-librarian who lives in L’Amable, ON.
