excerpt:

There are five species of rhinoceros. Two of those-the white rhinoceros and black rhinoceros-live in Africa. The other three species live in Asia.

internal art“Do You Know?” is a series where animal facts meet cartoon comedy. Do You Know The Rhinoceros? is a nonfiction title that has taken on the very popular colourful graphic novel format. In this title which is best suited for recreational reading, young readers are introduced to facts about the rhinoceros. Each page offers readers short informational excerpts that are accompanied with comical illustrations, such as, “When two rhinoceros meet, they cross their horns like fencers crossing swords. They do this in order to test each other’s strength and reflexes.” [Illustration of a rhinoceros dressed up as Zorro that has carved a Z in the other rhinoceros shirt and saying, “Are you impressed with my reflexes so far?”]. Informative words that are related to the rhinoceros, such as keratin, extinction, poaching, etc. have bolded text throughout the book for children to find in the glossary. Other specific rhinoceros information can be located via the book’s index.

internal art     Author Alain M. Bergeron has a passion for comics, and having a graphic novel element really sets the “Do You Know?” series apart from other animal fact books. Children will be attracted to the colourful illustrations and hilarious dialogue between the comical characters. Other subjects in the “Do You Know?” series include porcupines, rats, crows, crocodiles, leeches, chameleons, toads, spiders, dinosaurs, hyenas, komodo dragons, and praying mantises.

Highly Recommended.
