What Noise Do I Make? is a charming and interactive picture book that illustrates nearly forty animals with speech bubbles denoting their (often surprising, always amusing) calls and noises. Starting with the all-familiar cat and dog, the book quickly delves into well-known animals spotted at a local zoo, such as an elephant, red panda, and zebra. Exotic creatures the pangolin, tamarin, and cicada are some of the few atypical ones - are also depicted.
Examples of the sounds include:
Cat = Meow!
Dog = Woof!
Snake = hisssss
Alligator = Woarrrrgh
Dolphin = eeeeeee eeeeeeeeee click click click
Every few pages, the animals interact with each other in an amusing scene (cue much hilarity at storytime!).
The book culminates with a panoramic view illustrating the noises made by humans and our inventions, such as cars, bikes, an ice cream truck, and more.
The illustrations are drawn cartoon-style, with black outlines and brightly painted interiors, some coloured over the lines, adding a sense of hurried movement to the figures. Franz Marc-like colour choices are presented; imagine a teal and purple giraffe or a magenta and blue ostrich with legs and beak the shade of egg yolks. Its illustrations, unique content, and downright silliness present a refreshing take on the typical infant animal book. Simple, elegant, and fun, What Noise Do I Make? begs to be read aloud just not in a quiet zone!
Highly Recommended.
