Good Morning, City is a story that follows all of the very early morning activities that go on before most people are even awake. The bakers beginning to bake bread, joggers and dogs out in the park, the sun rising and people starting work are a few of the things depicted in this book. The text uses sound effects to emphasize certain aspects of the tasks, like clanging garbage cans, the sound of a bus driving or food cooking. The story starts in the dark of night when the city is still very quiet and moves from street lights and the moon illuminating the images to the sun rising over the skyline of the city. This book is very well written. It uses short simple sentences, and the words used are not repetitive so it would be a great book for a child learning to read. The short sentences would also be good for keeping a younger child engaged. The illustrations in Good Morning, City are a stylistically modern cartoon style that references an art deco era influence. The images start out dark and moody in the beginning of the book in deep shades of blue and purple, using the moon and artificial light, such as street lights, to illuminate the story. Then, as the moon fades, the light from the sunrise in the images ranges from a soft pink and misty grey to the brighter blue sky and white light of mid morning. Highly Recommended. Alison Schroeder has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and is a lover of children’s books.
