Each spread features a single verb (stretch, dive, race, etc.) which is acted out by an animal on one side of the spread, and a machine on the other. It’s a clever idea, one which will likely appeal to many little readers who are often drawn to animals and machines like cars and trucks. Printed on sturdy cardboard, this board book version of Animachines will likely survive the attentions of enthusiastic little hands, and its compact size makes it perfect for reading on the go. Simple but definitely child-friendly, Animachines is an enjoyable little board book for the youngest of readers. Recommended. Jane Whittingham is a children's librarian in British Columbia.

Adapted from the picture book 
There’s a tiny elfin creature hidden on each spread who also acts out each verb in different ways. This creature is not my favourite aspect of the book - I don’t really see how it fits into the animals/machines theme (not really being either), and it doesn’t seem to add anything to the text. The character might work better in a picture book as an added feature for older children, who might enjoy the challenge of discovering hidden images. Still, the little fellow is very tiny and doesn’t detract from the larger illustrations.
