CANADIAN CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK 1997

READING OPENS DOORS

Join The Canadian Children's Book Centre in celebrating the magic of books and reading with the twenty-first annual Canadian Children's Book Week. This year's theme is Reading Opens Doors and twenty-five authors and illustrators will tour Canada from coast-to-coast to help share the excitement about all the great Canadian children's books that are there for Canadian kids to discover. Reading Canadian books can provide children with unique tools with which to explore the world - reading really does open doors! Reading provides not only wonderful imaginative opportunities but also promotes understanding and cross-cultural connections. Reading Canadian books provides young readers with a greater understanding of Canada and the opportunities available to them as Canadians. And, reading Canadian books provides access to a culture that believes in the importance of books and reading and the values inherent in being able to read. Not only do Canadian books provide a unique means for our children to explore the cultural diversity that is integral to Canadian society today but Canadian children's books celebrate the richness that each of the ethnic groups brings to Canadian society as a whole. From the wacky antics of Robert Munsch's Where is Gahning through an exploration of the immigrant experience in Jim McGugan's Josepha: A Prairie Boy's Story or W.D. Valgardson's Sarah and the People of Sand River Canadian authors and illustrators explore what is best about Canada - who are Canadians.

Award-winning artist Robin Muller has created this year's fabulous Book Week poster and the CCBC is creating a new theme guide that will help you explore the magic of Canadian children's books at school, in the library or at home. This year's Book Week kit will also contain a directory of authors and illustrators who are available for school and library visits to help you join in sharing with Canadian children your excitement about great children's books.

The Canadian Children's Book Centre believes that reading really does open doors - doors that will continue to open throughout our lives. Let's get Canadian kids excited today - join us in celebrating Canadian Children's Book Week. Here's a list of the authors and illustrators who are helping open doors from November 1 - 8:
