The success and popularity of the earlier paper edition of The Elders are Watching (SummerWild Productions, 1990), and the subsequent second edition from Raincoast (1994) are testaments to the combined skills of writer David Bouchard and illustrator Roy Henry Vickers. Perhaps "writer" and "illustrator" are insufficient terms to describe the poetic expressions and artistic impressions which combine to make this hardcover edition a true work of art.
Vickers' intense interest in and knowledge of West Coast native life and culture and his deft use of colour and "shadow images" merge with his sensitive depiction of the natural world. Blend his artistry with the evocative, lyrical style of Bouchard's poetic genius, and readers are treated to this wonderful book.
A great read-aloud for children (and others), the book is a must purchase for every school and public library collection, and it is a natural as a gift for anyone who enjoys good literature and fine artwork.
Highly recommended.
