excerpt:

'Bedtime!' said the Mother.

'NO!' said the Baby, playing in his car. 'I'm going to stay up all night.'

'Oh, no you're not!' said the Mother.

But the Baby revved up his car...vrruuum-chugga-chug...then drove away as fast as he could, and the Mother couldn't catch him.

image Helen Cooper, who lives in London, England, with her husband, Ted Devan, himself an author/illustrator, was previously a music teacher before becoming a full-time author/illustrator. Earlier works include The Bear Under the Stairs [Waterstone's Book of the Month, and Smarties Young Judges' Book Prize], Little Monster Did It!, and four miniature books [The Tale of Pig and Duck, Frog, and Bear].

The night owl baby in question just can't seem to settle down. He revs up his car and sets off to find a companion for his nocturnal adventures. His overtures are repeatedly rejected, as all potential playmates [tiger, soldiers, train, and even the moon] are too tired to play at night. Eventually Baby and his car run out of gas and are stranded in a darkening world of sleeping toys. Fortunately, someone who has Baby's best interests at heart [ie. Mother] comes to his rescue.

Cooper's illustrations transport reader and listener to a world where imagination is the rule, a child's world. Baby's bedroom and toys are transformed into a landscape towering with tigers and castles, peopled by soldiers with toothbrushes, and guitar-playing bears. The full-page illustrations glow with rich deep colours, so much so, they almost look warm to the touch. Any young child, or parent for the matter, will find this book to be the perfect nightcap after a long, busy day.

Highly recommended.

Leslie Millar is a mother and substitute teacher.
