excerpt:
To protect themselves from bee stings, beekeepers wear gloves, boots, and overalls. They also wear a bread-rimmed hat with a veil that keeps bees from landing on their face or in their hair, mouth, or ears. The beekeepers in the picture are well protected. Every part of their body is covered so bees cannot sting them. Bees can see dark colors better than they can see light colors or white. When they become angry, they look for someone or something to sting. A light-colored or white outfit "hides" the beekeeper from the bees so that they do not have a target to sting. This book, one of a series of four titles describing various types of farming, takes the young reader on a tour of a bee farm. Written in a clear and interesting style, the book covers every aspect of bee farming, [although not in great depth] - the production of honey and beeswax, the care of the bees and the benefits we enjoy from the farmer's labour. The color illustrations, both photographs and explanatory drawings, provide more information on every page. The attractiveness of the pages is further enhanced by the imaginative little drawings of busy bees buzzing up and down the borders. Vocabulary words are printed in bold type, and there is a glossary and an index on the last page.
Kalman is well known for her excellent books for children. Credit is given to teacher consultants from Ontario Agri-Food Education and the Ontario Beekeepers' Association, among others.
This book would be an excellent addition to a library collection.
Highly recommended.
