image excerpt:

Tonight as they had done many nights before, the old woman and her granddaughter took out paper cutouts of the twelve that had taken part in the Great Race.
A compelling story about the origins of the Chinese Zodiac. The Great Race is called by Great Buddha and pits such creatures as the ox, rat, horse, and dragon against one another to see who will reach the Jade City first. An old woman retells the story to her granddaughter not only to help the girl remember the order of the animals in the zodiac, but also to teach her that speed and craftiness are not the most important values. Beautifully illustrated by Chinese-Canadian artist Zhong-Yang Huang.

Highly recommended.

Elizabeth Buckland.
