For visual learners, this book is a dream come true! Thirty themes are covered
with 700 coloured illustrations and more than 5,000 terms. The themes range
from earth science and biology to music, architecture and sports. An
opportunity to expand both the reader's vocabulary and knowledge is evidenced
by the wealth of information provided by the book's fabulous life-like
illustrations whose labels clearly identify each of the illustrations'
components. Resembling photographs in appearance, the illustrations have been
generated by computer graphics and, depending on the subject, cover the gamut
from the very simple to the highly detailed. In the top corner of each page is
the subject heading in boldface type as well as a colourful diamond-shaped icon
matching the topic. A table of contents and a detailed index direct readers to
specific themes and subjects.
The strength of this book lies in its adaptability. Teachers can keep the
dictionary in the classroom or library for general reference or use it to help
ESL and special needs students to identify objects, learn some basic concepts
and expand their vocabularies. Even gifted students who want to extend their
knowledge of certain topics will benefit from this artfully presented book.
Well planned, with an attractive layout, the visual dictionary has a place in
every school or home library.
Highly recommended.
