Witches, ghosts and goblins need entertainment, and the enterprising characters in The Ghouls'
Night Out are always on the lookout for ways to have fun. Annalise the Witch, Ernie the Ghost
and Milton the Skeleton are hardworking ghouls who do their best to keep their house looking
haunted. They love Hallowe'en because they get candy delivered (left behind by scared kids).
They want to take part in the fun themselves because telling the same ghost stories year after year
is becoming dull. With great effort, they make their own costumes which they believe are
delightfully scary. They're dressed up to look like ...boys and girls. The neighbours tell them to
go home and get into their costumes before they can get candy. Confused, they give up and
undress, scaring the kids on the street. Once again the kids leave their booty behind, and so the
ghouls get their Hallowe'en candy anyway. They never do figure out what was wrong with
their costumes, but go back to making their house look spooky and haunted.
The Ghouls' Night Out is a pleasant read for an advanced younger reader. The 2-3 page
chapters make it easy to get through, and the paperback format is friendly. The colourful
illustrations on the cover are humorous, and the line drawings throughout reflect the happy
outlook of the ghouls.
