excerpt: Actually, they (chameleons) don't just look grumpy. They are grumpy. So if two chameleons bump into each other, things can get pretty lively. There's lots of puffing and hissing - and sometimes there's a real fight. And that's when chameleons do what they're most famous for - they change color.Candlewick Press has published some wonderful non-fiction about animals in its "Read and Wonder" series. This title, though not part of the "Read and Wonder" series, adds to this body of attractive, well-illustrated non-fiction for children at the primary level. Martin Jenkins has written an engaging and witty description of chameleons from a first person perspective. An index allows children to look up such subjects as "Madagascar," "tongue," and "changing color." It is good to see an index in a book geared to younger children. Sue Shields has illustrated this book with wonderfully vibrant and expressive chameleons. Her bold and detailed illustrations work well with the text to produce a fun and informative book about an interesting subject. Highly Recommended. Lesley Beckett Balcom is a public services librarian at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
