These two easy to read hockey how-to books are aimed at young hockey enthusiasts intent on improving their goal scoring or their goaltending skills. The books are written with input from a panel of hockey coaches, each with outstanding credentials. Instructions are concise and clearly expressed. The magazine format of the books is very appealing. Well-designed pages focus the reader on the photos first and the text second! Flashy stop-action colour photos of today's NHL stars are shot from a variety of vantage points - at ice level, from above the net and often in the midst of some pretty intense action. Instructional photos make use of the modelling of nine young hockey players to demonstrate correct technique, often with a series of photos.
Of particular interest are the hockey tips printed as inset articles throughout the book. As well, photos are often captioned with quotations from hockey's greats. Other topics covered include discussions of equipment, fitness and mental preparation for the game.
Each book in the series focuses on one aspect of the game. These two books follow an earlier title, Hockey the NHL Way: The Basics. School libraries cannot have enough books on hockey. This series would be a welcome addition.
Recommended.
