Big Trucks, Big Wheels shares the wonderful production values of the other books in the "Crabapples" series. Colourful and
well-illustrated, it has a good index, table of contents and glossary. The book's subject matter is of great interest to young children.
The book contains excellent illustrations of and information about various types of trucks. Two minor criticisms are that occasionally the information is misleading or is something that almost every child old enough to be interested in the book would already know. In the following passage, for example, the first paragraph is excellent, but surely it is unnecessary to explain
what a truck box is unless the book is meant for ESL children.
Some 4X4s have an open area behind the cab. It is
called a box. The box is handy for carrying all kinds
of stuff. You can load it with camping gear, bicycles,
dirt bikes, or toboggans.
The labelling of the big rig on pages 6 and 7 contains examples both of misleading and redundant information. It would lead readers to believe that the tractor consists of only the sleeping compartment and does not include the engine and cab. Then the engine caption reads, "Big trucks have big engines. The engine turns the wheels and makes the truck move."
Recommended.
