Volume V Number 6 . . . . November 13, 1998
Barbara Reid has shared her award-winning clay modelling
techniques in a previous book, Playing with Plasticine,
published in 1990. Fun with Modelling Clay is mostly a reprint
of Playing with Plasticine, but it does not inform the
potential buyer who may already have the previous book.
The main difference between the books is that Fun with Modelling
Clay has colour illustrations while the older book is in black
and white. But many of the illustrations are the same.
Barbara Reid's illustrations are favourites with kids and adults
alike. Her ability to turn lumps of clay into delightful objects,
animals, insects, people and backgrounds surprises readers
with every new book.
Published in softcover, this slim book will be useful for parents
to use with small children at home, for older children to use on
their own, and for classroom use. The book is illustrated with
picture examples of each basic type of clay object, and then
colour drawings with the steps to construct the object clearly
defined. Further drawings suggest other possibilities, along with
building tips. Reid has included information about the basic
tools needed (most can be found around the house), and lessons on
making different types of animals, people and pictures. Short,
concisely written instructions and descriptions are easy to
follow. Directional arrows show how the modeling clay is to be
worked.
Working with clay is a wonderful activity for children, just for
fun or to illustrate stories or non-fiction work. Children of all
ages and talents are always pleased with what they produce. Older
children interested in exploring their artistic talents would be
well served to use this book as a basic guide. This book will be
an excellent motivator and instructor for successful results, but
it is not an essential purchase if you already have Playing with
Plasticine.
Recommended with reservations.
