excerpt:
One lonely Gummi Bear,
what's he going to do?
Along comes a friend
and then there are...
This simple counting book is made up of 10 pairs of facing pages. On one is
found a large white number [1 through 10] which is superimposed on an
unchanging background of a pile of coloured Gummi Bears. On the other page are
four lines of poetry with an illustration of the appropriate number of Gummi
Bears carrying out the action described within the poetry. As illustrated in
the "excerpt," the last word in the fourth line is to be verbally supplied by
the listening child. Should the child not yet know his/her numbers, the
missing word is the first word on the next page. Through "5," each new bear is
of a different colour and then the colours repeat. Beginning counters should
have no difficulty through "8"; however, the Gummi Bears in "9" and "10"
overlap somewhat, and some children may count some bears more than once.
Nonetheless, an acceptable introduction to numbers, and one which may motivate
those children who already know the sweeter version of the Gummi Bears.
Recommended.
Give Dave Jenkinson 10 Gummi Bears, and he'll show you how to count to zero.
