Bloor and Christie: The Mystery
of the Bright Red Ribbon is the third book both authored and illustrated by
Gina Calleja, and what child would not love it, with its detailed
illustrations, each one of which has a tale to tell. A small part of the book
is a counting book, but its special attraction is a refreshingly original idea
in a pre-school book. And what is this idea? It involves genealogy.
Ridiculous, you say? Far too difficult a concept! Well, on the contrary, what
four-year-old child has not been subjected to well-meaning friends or relatives
making remarks such as: "Oh he looks exactly like his father!" "No, he's the
image of his mother! Look at that chin!" "His eyes are exactly like his
grand-dad's." And so on.
Gina Calleja explains the basics of a family tree through two perky canaries,
Bloor and Christie. Calleja follows them through their wedding and the hatching
of their first brood of four chicks. Her illustrations are hilarious and
captivating while making the point about each offspring having a feature
resembling that of a parent or grandparent. One chick, although she resembles
her two grandmothers, has a bright red ribbon on her head! Where did that come
from? That's the whiff of mystery that climaxes the tale.
Highly recommended.
