Wild League on Ice was obviously written with the great ice storm
that hit Quebec and Eastern Ontario several winters ago in mind. Written
in rhyme, it tells how the village of Nice was covered with ice when the
Wild League was holding their championship hockey tournament there. The
tournament had to be cancelled; but all the teams, each consisting of a
different animal, co-operated to help repair the damage. For instance, the
bears raised the downed power poles, the beavers replaced the crossbars
and braces, and the eagles restrung the cable.
The Beaverbrook team, The Canooks, were quite good at working with poles,
and with lumber and wood.
At the end of the book, two pages of Canadian Red Cross tips for emergency
situations are included. This addition would make the book an excellent
resource to use in teaching about what to do in case of such natural
disasters as floods, ice storms, blizzards and wind storms.
Highly Recommended.
