excerpt: It just seemed to open up between them like a big orange mouth breathing flames high into the night sky. Free at last, the fire beast roared, spitting sparks at the moon and cracking its jaws with every exploding ember. Declan felt its burning breath on his face and screamed.Declan is a troubled teenager. His mother takes different jobs around the country, and his father stays home. Declan goes wild, befriends other disaffected teenagers who like to skateboard; loses them in a fire which he is accused of starting; is given a second chance; takes it and is redeemed. Oh yes, he is advised by a wise old native and beats the mountain. Ben Bo has produced a reasonably well written book, but, in spite of that, I couldn't get into the story. The characters were not likeable, and it seems as though I've read it so many times before. Even the use of skateboarding and snowboarding seemed trite. I can't imagine too many teens reading this book. Recommended with Reservations.
