The art of storytelling and how it can be shared from one generation to another is clearly illustrated in Troon Harrison's delightful book, The Memory Horse. The narrative style allows the reader to personally share in the young girl's story. The author deals with the loss of a loved one, Grandma, through the celebration of her life as depicted in the pictures on the memory horse. Eugenie Fernandes's full page illustrations capture the rural setting and assist young readers in connecting the story's events with the flashbacks to the past. This approach makes the symbols on the memory horse easy to understand.

Author of other well-received picture books, such as Lavender Moon, Aaron's Awful Allergies and The Dream Collector, Troon Harrison has provided readers, young and old alike, with a touching story in The Memory Horse. It is certainly a picture book to be read aloud and to be read again.
