Dmitri was closer to the edge of the pines, staring out over the dangerous slope where no one was to go. And then the mountain exploded.In this, the ninth adventure of the Screech Owls hockey team, the Owls are headed to Nagano to play in a tournament at Big Hat, the same arena where their heroes played in the 1998 Winter Olympics. They are all in top form, with Nish finding numerous opportunities to play practical jokes on the rest of the team, when tragedy strikes in the form of a death at the tournament's opening banquet. But why are their belongings searched? Who is following them? And, most importantly of all, will they win the tournament? The Screech Owls books are very entertaining, not only for fans of hockey but for anyone who likes a mystery. There are both male and female characters, as well as a handicapped boy who remains a valued friend and who has also become the team videographer. MacGregor puts quite a bit of detail into his books, and Nightmare at Nagano is no exception. Young readers can laugh along with Nish's discovery of the soft drink, "Sweat" and heated toilet seats as the Owls discover a bit about Japan. Recommended.
