Friends is a delightful story depicting both the cooperation and the possible conflict involved in
friendship. Sam and Alice discover an egg in the hen house, and, together, they carefully set out
to take it home. Part way there, though, they have an argument, and the egg breaks. The children
are angry with each other and discover that this anger also makes them feel very sad. However,
the finding of another egg provides the opportunity for forgiveness. The friends once again set off
to bring the egg home, together.
Kim Lewis provides a warm narrative of two very yong children learning about friendship. Her large, soft, coloured pencil drawings give a clear portrayal of a child's life on a farm. The animals and the attention to detail bring life to the text and engage the reader in careful exploration of the illustrations. The story, which is told via simple vocabulary, is presented in a large font which enables the beginning readers to enjoy an independent reading experience.
