excerpt:

The house moved. Slowly, in grinding stops and scraping starts, it skidded closer to the water. The ropes were payed out one moment and held back the next.

The onlookers who had moved closer to the water's edge breathed easier. Then one of the skids hooked. For one sickening moment the house tipped.

Patsy, an 11-year-old girl living in Newfoundland, leads a normal life for a city girl. Then word comes that her Gran and her uncle will have to leave their home in Shoal Harbour, one of the Newfoundland outports. Patsy and her family travel to Shoal Harbour to convince her relatives to leave. Instead, it is Patsy, who has learned what it is to be a true Newfoundlander with a love of the sea and the wild island who wants to stay.

Betty Fitzpatrick Dorion has written a lovely little story about perhaps one of the saddest times in Newfoundland's history, the closing of the outports. Using her own memories and the rich vernacular of the island, she describes a coming of age tale of a young girl that is both interesting and sad. Despite these positives, this is not a book that, in my opinion, will be picked up by young readers for there is really very little to keep their attention. The author had a perfect opportunity to relate a tale of the true impact of the relocation of the Newfoundland outports on that society, but she was not quite able to take advantage of it
