Here is a wonderful beginner's cookbook for the middle years student. Sturdy and attractive, with
a clear font and full of charming cartoon sketches of food characters, The Kids Can Press Jumbo
Cookbook will inspire young cooks everywhere. Carefully organized with a table of contents and
an extensive index, this book presents kid-friendly recipe choices and covers the entire Canada
Food Rules gamut. There are recipes for breakfasts, soups, sandwiches, pizza, salads and
vegetables, pasta and grains, fish, chicken and beef, breads and, of course, cakes and cookies.
The recipes have been chosen to appeal to the age group for whom this book is intended, but all
are nutritious. There is just enough different food here to appeal to the curious, but not to scare
off the traditional child who is beginning to cook. For example, there is a recipe for Thai Veggie
Rice Noodles, but the reader can also attempt Perfect Hamburgers or Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.
There is a legend on each page for the degree of difficulty of the recipe, the number of people it
serves and the time necessary for its preparation. Several recipes have added sidebars containing
"Helpful Hints" or "Try This" suggestions, but all recipes have the necessary utensils listed and
highlighted in yellow, and all the ingredients listed both in metric and Imperial measurements.
The book begins with cheerful advice on measuring, safety, cooking terms, useful utensils and
menu planning. At no time does it talk down to its readers. At 256 pages, this is a jumbo sized
book, and it will keep any fortunate middle school student who picks it up very busy in the
kitchen.
Highly Recommended.
