excerpt:

Before she could make a sound, her whiskers lightly touched Matthew's cheek. Matthew's nose twitched. His mouth crinkled. His eyes blinked and opened wide! Matthew stared in shock. Hovering before him was Yin, an angel cat, with angel cat wings and a glow that lit up the dark room.
Michael Garland's Angel Cat is an interesting story of a pet's attachment to its human family even after death. Yin is one of a family's two pet cats; unfortunately, he is killed in a car accident. Yin returns as an angel seen by its playmate, Yang, and sensed by the young son, Matthew. When fire threatens the family, Yin is able to use its presence to wake Matthew and save the family.

The death of Yin is handled with dignity. The reader learns that Yin is not careful crossing a road, and the next illustration depicts a backyard burial. The illustrations are colorful and realistic. Whenever Yin visits after his death, footprints can be found rather symbolically amidst the text.

This is a nice story about the strong sentiment of an animal towards its human family. It alludes to the innocence of the young in that only the youngest child is able to sense the angel cat's presence. It is not a must have for every collection, but, for animal lovers, it would be a nice addition.

Recommended.
