Volume VII Number 11 . . . . February 2, 2001
Part of the "ShowPeace" series examining conflict resolution, this 10-minute video is
designed to create an awareness of the increasing problem of bullying and how people
contribute to it by turning a blind eye. Using only lively animation and music (there is no
dialogue), the video features androgynous black stick figures who dance to an up-tempo
percussive beat. At school, a child is mercilessly teased and taunted by a much larger
student. The bully's relentless mistreatment of the child ranges from stealing the child's
lunch to actual physical harm. Finally, the two fight on the school roof from which the
victim falls and breaks his leg. Fearful of punishment, the bully runs home to hide, but the
teacher and several students follow him home and tell one of his parents what he has done.
Back at school, the bully is excluded from the group. The messages in the video are clear:
bullying, which can happen anywhere in society (not just on the playground) should not be
tolerated; and there are consequences for bullying behaviour.
Vibrant and colourful, this video sustains viewers' interest throughout, largely because of the
quick-paced action, the variety of camera angles and the use of percussion rather than dialogue or
narration.
Though there are no solutions given to the problem of bullying, the video should spark lively
discussion.
