The premise of this slight book is a good one, and, if it had been supported by more polished writing and illustrating, this might have been a much more successful stab at the counting niche in children's books. The size and font of the text are good. The use of rhyming is pretty standard, and the choice of animals and picnic eats is fairly inventive. Unfortunately, the illustrations are weak at best. They appear jumbled to the reader. The use of color and placement of the numbers make it difficult to pick out the items to be counted. Many counting picture books incorporate the entire picture into the counting scheme allowing the reader to count numerous items to the desired number. This is not done with this book. Frankly, there are much better choices available for counting picture books.

      Although I was not impressed by author/illustrator Jenny Visscher's first attempt at a children's book, I look forward to seeing future efforts by this young Canadian.
