excerpt:

The day of the wedding arrived. Minnie put on her elaborate wedding gown and Morris, his shiny tuxedo. With their last few dollars they had hired a white automobile, driven by the servant in red livery, who drove them to the synagogue on Henry Street.

"I have an ache in my stomach," Minnie said nervously as they rode along. "Maybe we've gone too far."

"Don't worry, sweet pea. I bet the synagogue is more crowded than for the High Holidays. This is going to be a wedding that no one will ever forget."

image Author Cary Fagan has done a wonderful job with his first children's book. This award winning author shows his talent in this lovely story adapted from A Ghetto Wedding by Abraham Cahan. Illustrator Regolo Ricci is a true artist; his rich palate and striking eye for detail bring this story set in Toronto's bustling Kensington market in the 1920's to life for the reader. This tale has two poor market merchants planning an elaborate wedding in order to ensure that their guests will shower them with expensive gifts. Morris's plan doesn't work out exactly how they'd hoped. None of their friends attend the lavish wedding or reception. When they return to their neighborhood, they discover why. Of course, the newly married couple learns that they do not have to have the best of everything to be happy. This story has a nice Canadian historical flavor, making it a good classroom or read aloud choice for older elementary children.
