Volume VII Number 14 . . . . March 16, 2001
In A Mind of Your Own, four children, aged 11 to 13, who attended a summer camp for
children with learning disabilities, share their stories. The children are introduced by name before
the title of the video and then after a brief camp scene, each child tells about his or her
experiences. The children speak frankly and confidently about their strengths and problems. Many
of these are demonstrated in live-action sequences at home, at school and in the community.
Common threads are the pain caused by peer teasing, the frustration of being different and failing,
the determination to work to overcome difficulties and the varied unique talents of each
individual. This video could be used to encourage students experiencing learning difficulties
and to develop understanding in their peers, teachers and parents. The pacing and audio quality
are excellent. The images are varied, crisp and enhance the dialogue. The video is close captioned
(decoder required). A Mind of Your Own won the AMTEC Award of Merit.
