Everything a child needs to know about hockey can't be contained in 22 pages, but Robb Johnstone has collected a lot of basic information, ranging from the rules of hockey to how to become an NHL player to hockey history in this appealing book. Young children with an interest in hockey will be entertained by the action photographs on each page and, at the same time, will be able to read the carefully written information in each two-page chapter, such as this one called "Following the Rules": excerpt: Players have to follow the rules. They cannot use their sticks to trip or hit other players. They also cannot hold another player back using their hands or sticks. To make sure everyone will be safe, players must keep their sticks below the shoulders. If they do not, they can be called for 'high-sticking.'
A difference between this book and traditional sports books for children is the inclusion of
information about good nutrition and related sports to maintain fitness levels. Past greats as well
as today's stars are highlighted. Further information can be found on recommended web sites
listed in some chapters. A table of contents, glossary and index round out the book.
Given that many children know a lot about hockey and are already experienced players by the age
of eight, this book may confirm what they already know. For others, it will be a solid introduction
into Canada's favorite sport.
