excerpt:
Swirls Swirling patterns are made from twisting, curling lines.
Spirals
Spiral patterns are made from lines that coil round and round.
From the "Let's Look At" series for preschoolers, Let's Look at
Patterns examines checks, spots, zigzags, wiggles, swirls and more.
Everything from wiggly red toothpaste to spiral seashells appear on the
pages. Household items, food and things found in nature illustrate the
concepts. The photographs are bold and colourful, with pictures floating
on a white background to make them stand out. Boys and girls of various
ethnic backgrounds show off a variety of creative clothes and are shown
creating their own painted designs. The book demonstrates how patterns can
be found on animals too, from the scales on a fish to the stripes on
zebras and a zigzag pattern on a snake. The pictures are labelled simply
but clearly throughout the book. Some of the terms are unusual, such as
"splodges of messy paint" or the "stripey candy sticks." Children may
enjoy spotting images repeated from other books in the series, since the
same blue teapot appears in the Let's
Look At Kitchen and the colourful handkerchief reappears in
Let's Look at Mix and Match.
Recommended.
