William’s Getaway
William’s Getaway
Edgar loves to play with William. And sometimes, sometimes William likes to play with Edgar. But not today……
Today William loves playing with Edgar.
William has a younger brother Edgar who wants to play with him all the time. Sometimes William likes to play with Edgar too. Some days though, William would like time to himself, especially when Edgar is being difficult. One day, William tries to escape to his hot air balloon (in reality, it is the top bunk in his bedroom). Usually, he is safe from Edgar there because Edgar is afraid to climb the ladder, but one day, Edgar wants to climb up. When Mom gives the okay, William relents. He knows he is being given the responsibility of looking after his little brother. He discourages Edgar from bringing along something to drink, something to eat, something to wear, and Mr. Bibbles, the monkey. All he needs is his big brother William. William encourages and supports Edgar up the ladder, and, when he arrives, they go on a hot air balloon adventure together. Today, William loves playing with Edgar.
Annika Dunklee’s storyline is a lovely description of the love between two young brothers as well as the understanding and careful supervision that Mom provides. The reader sees through the older brother’s eyes his growth of character in accepting the care and responsibility of another person.
Yong Ling Kang’s cartoon-style illustrations are full-page, full-colour drawings that depict a typical household with small children. When William’s imagination takes hold, the reader can see the hot air balloon and the countryside below.
Young children will enjoy having William’s Getaway read to them or reading it alone. Pre-readers can understand the story by following the pictures.
