Chad Geran’s Do You Know What I Am? A Rhyming Book is a playful rhyming book for young children to learn how to rhyme and to practice rhyming. A repetitive format is presented in the form of a rhyming couplet, a question of “Do you know what I am?”, and the rhyming answer to the question. There are pictorial clues to aid the reader in guessing what the rhyming answer is. Near the end of the book, there are fill-in-the-blanks paired with detailed pictures for readers to say the rhyming words such as “I’m a tin ___. I’m a frying ___”.
Do You Know What I Am? is more than just a rhyming board book. It’s a combination guessing and rhyming book in one which makes this book playful. Readers are playing a game as they read along and rhyme. There are only 1-2 very short simple rhyming sentences on each page, and the rhymes are not difficult. Even if the reader doesn’t fully understand how to rhyme, the associated illustrations give away the answer (assuming the toddlers already have the necessary vocabulary) thereby allowing young readers to successfully rhyme on their own just by reading the visual cues for each rhyming set.
The graphics are colourfully designed in warm, vibrant, eye-catching bright tones. The pictures are very cartoon-like as, for example, a log and baseball bat have eyes and mouths. That every characterized item has a friendly happy face invites and encourages toddlers to continue reading and wanting to reread this fun board book. The visuals are simple and direct so the young reader can use them as cues to guess the rhyming words.
Overall, Do You Know What I Am? is an entertaining playful board book for toddlers that also teaches readers how to rhyme.
