Mom Marries Mum!
Mom Marries Mum!
At the wedding we will all blow bubbles.
What a perfect day!
Mom Marries Mum! is a celebration of love. Two young siblings, a brother and sister, are very excited about Mom and Mum’s upcoming wedding. They have so many questions about how the family will enjoy this happy day. Who will attend? How can we help? And what will we wear are all questions which the excited children ask about. This little story is brimming with the message of the joy of love and family.
This book is a rewrite of author Ken Setterington’s original 2004 picture book Mom and Mum are Getting Married. ( www.cmreviews.ca/cm/vol11/no6/momandmumaregettingmarried.html )
The original story, aimed at early years students, explores the roles that the brother and sister will play in the wedding and also touches on how each family member would like to see something a little different on the special day. Eventually, everyone is very pleased to celebrate the happy day together. The new board book version of the story is written for toddlers in simple sentences and employs questions, all of which build upon the excitement of the wedding day.
The illustrations of Alice Priestley are updated in the new board book. The drawings are softer both in design and colour, and there is movement in the images which helps to express the joy of the day.
Mom Marries Mum! celebrates same-sex marriage without being didactic. The story is told through the voice of the little girl who is excited about her parents’ special day. After all, this is a special day for her little brother and herself as well. Setterington’s writing expresses diversity and is accepting of the loving relationship that is the theme of this book.
