A Year of Everyday Wonders
First day of the new year
First wake-up
First waffles
First fight with your brother
First snowfall
First snowballs
From the first day of the new year to the last sleep of the year, readers are taken through daily wonders in the life of a little girl and her family. The types of days range from eating waffles, trips to the beach, and to first days of school. With each day, readers get to know the girl a little better, like how she always forgets her umbrella and fights all the time with her brother, until finally readers have made their way to the last wake-up of the year and the last waffles of the year, only to begin all over again with the first day of the new year.
From the first couple pages of this picture book, readers will just feel like curling up with a warm drink and a blanket. The sparse, poetic words are all that are needed as the beautiful watercolour illustrations communicate everything that is needed and a magical hygge feeling is created. The small amount of words on each page complement the artwork perfectly which has more space to take over the pages. The words and illustrations combined make A Year of Everyday Wonders an age-accessible read as the pictures are detailed enough to appeal to older ages and the words are easy for beginning readers. The story, itself, is a great reminder to all of the beauty in everyday life and how each day can bring something new despite the routines we have throughout the year. Whether you want to curl up with a lovely book together or learn about seasons and the calendar, A Year of Everyday Wonders is highly recommended for your collections.
