Darly’s Trip to the Moon
Darly’s Trip to the Moon
Now what would she need to lift off into space?
A helmet of course, and some tin foil just in case.
A suit made of the fuzziest wool she was told,
would be the best material because the moon could be quite cold.
Written in memory of their mother Darlene, Horman and Walker tell the story of a little girl named Darly who takes a trip to the moon one morning. Darly’s adventure begins with a question: “…is the moon really made out of cheese?” Darly decides to find out, preparing for her interplanetary journey by collecting her trusty toy mouse, dreaming up a spaceship and packing crackers ready for snack-time.
Walker renders Darly and her surroundings in pen, ink and watercolour, highlighting small details in yellow set against a background of bright blue. A comical furry alien makes an appearance on the moon, marking the climax of Darly’s adventure and precipitating her quick journey back home to Earth.
Horman writes in simple rhyming couplets that capture Darly’s excitement as her imagination takes flight and she settles into her world of make-believe. In our pandemic times where technology and screens have become ubiquitous for people of all ages, this story is a welcome celebration of imaginative play.
Darly’s Trip to the Moon is a lovely addition to the Darly series sure to entertain young readers.
