Malaika’s Surprise
Malaika’s Surprise
I touch his soft hands. Does he know I’m his big sister? I think of all the things I will teach him. I know he will love carnival and soca.
Malaika is apprehensive when her parents announce a new baby is joining their family soon. She wonders if she will be replaced by the new addition. Her new friend at school, Malayka M., has also come from a far away place, and the friendship brings Malaika comfort until the baby comes. Ultimately, the story celebrates the joy of shared love within a family, especially when a new baby comes.
The story is written from Malaika’s perspective and is written with a blend of English and Caribbean patois. The reader is also introduced to Malaika’s blended family. Malaika describes her family as “my brown and pink family”. The artwork is a combination of gouache, soft pastel and digital editing. It is breathtakingly colourful and especially showcases the traditional carnival dress of Malaika and her siblings. The children literally dance across the page to soca music.
A glossary of the French and Arabic words and phrases used throughout the story is a helpful feature. The words and phrases are also italicized within the text. Overall, Mailaka’s Surprise celebrates culture, friendship and family in a captivating, warm way. This book is particularly helpful in preparing older siblings for a new baby as it validates the potential feelings and worries they may have.
