Early One Morning
Early One Morning
Light fills the window and I see the sun.
I jump out of bed. The day has begun!
My moms are still in bed asleep. My sister too. I won’t make a peep.
But then I hear a rumbling sound! It’s not from my tummy so I look all around.
In this story, two moms and a little girl continue to sleep while a young boy and his cat are the only ones awake. The little boy hears his purring cat and decides to make breakfast. His naughty cat eats butter without bread. Just after his breakfast is done, his two moms and his sister are awake. He greets them by saying “Good morning!”
Early One Morning is a short, rhyming board book for the very young. The focus of the book is the young boy who is waiting for his two moms and sister to wake up. The cadence in this story will keep young readers engaged, and the short sentence structure encourages little readers to finish the sentences.
Illustrations in this book are eye-catching. I can see young readers appreciating the big eyes of the cat and boy. The playful imagery with the black outline is interesting and enjoyable.
Early One Morning covers more than just the topic of same sex parents. The same sex parents are in the background and are not the story’s focal point. Brasliņa does a beautiful job at weaving a story on inclusion while keeping it appealing to young readers. This is a must-read during Pride Month and beyond.
