Depth of Field
Depth of Field
The world is ending, and I can’t breathe. Correction. My world is ending, and it’s all thanks to
Noel Brown. Noel and his weekly parties on his giant country property. Parties I never go to because Noel and I have a bad history. Like, Noel beating me up every day back in junior high.
But here I am, standing outside his house and looking through the window. I came here tonight because my girlfriend, Lian, asked me to. Begged for us to go. Things have been rocky between us. I gave in. Told myself Noel wouldn’t dare do anything. We’re in twelfth grade now, and I’m over six feet tall. I tower over Noel. I thought, What’s the worst that can happen?
And then the worst happened.
Depth of Field is the story of a high school student, Josh, who has come to a turning point with his girlfriend, Lian. Readers are introduced to Josh as he watches his girlfriend kiss Josh’s nemesis, Noel. Upon confronting Lian about the kiss and warning her that Noel is up to no good, as he always is, Josh leaves the party and heads for home. Trying to talk sense into Lian doesn’t work as she wants to believe that Noel is a good guy who has changed a lot – even though there are rumors about his family and the drug trade…
Determined to prove to Lian and himself that he is a brave and determined person, Josh makes some wrong decisions for a school project. Lying to his dads and his best friend are only two of the decisions Josh makes that will lead him into the danger zone. Losing his way in a forested area and stumbling upon a drug grow-op get him into more danger than he bargains for, and he finds himself fleeing for his life.
Depth of Field moves very quickly in its entirety. From start to finish, readers find out some personal characteristics and information about the main character, Josh. His relationships with his dads, teacher, best friend, girlfriend, and a high school bully are briefly covered, allowing readers to see exactly who Josh is, what he is afraid of, and what he values most. Readers see that friendship, forgiveness, and believing in the love of those around you are what matter in the end.
Depth of Field is a fast-moving novel, with a few twists and turns that will keep readers wondering what will happen next. It would be suitable for middle years’ students who appreciate a novel that won’t take them very long to dive into and finish.
