Grandfather Bowhead, Tell Me a Story
Grandfather Bowhead, tell me a story
of all the wonderful things you have seen.
Well, Little Arvaaq, in all my two hundred years
I’ve seen the northern lights running across the vast sky,
but they do not compare to the wonder of your very first breath.
Grandfather Bowhead, Tell Me a Story is a story that will pull at your heart strings. It is a story that celebrates the bond between a grandfather and a grandchild.
Living over 200 years, Bowhead whales are the longest-living mammals on the planet. In this beautiful story, a baby bowhead whale asks his grandfather bowhead whale about all the wonderful things he has seen in his lifetime. Each time, Grandfather Bowhead whale responds that, although he has seen such wonderous things, nothing compares to Little Arvaaq. This story also shares with readers many of the wonders and animals native to the Arctic landscape, including the vibrant Northern lights, large icebergs and sea creatures.
The writing uses a simple and repetitive style. Little Arvaaq asks a question, and Grandfather Bowhead responds in the same style, always assuring him in the same predictive tone that nothing compares to the love and magnificence of his Little Arvaaq. This book is best for older children who can sit through a longer story or shared in small snippets for younger children.
The illustrations in Grandfather Bowhead, Tell Me a Story are magnificent. The deep blues and lyrical tone make you feel as if you are dancing underwater with the whales. In certain pages, like the one in which an iceberg is shown to compare the love of Grandfather Bowhead whale, you can see the depth of love.
