Chaiwala!
Chaiwala!
Next station, Jaipur!
The train screeches to a halt.
We have ten minutes.
Perfect time for chai!
Chaiwala! is a heartwarming little tale about one of the simplest things that brings people together – a cup of chai! In Indian culture, a cup of chai is enjoyed several times a day, sometimes in a rush, sometimes savored and many times to catch up with family, take a break and enjoy the moment. It is the part of the day that my family looks forward to the most. We all get a steaming cup of milky, sweet chai with a little snack, and we chat about our day.
In this story, a mother and daughter make a quick stop at the train station for a cup of chai. They only have a few minutes to run to the chaiwala and order. Priti Maheshwari perfectly describes the scents, sounds and feelings associated with a cup of chai: the clinking of the glasses, the different flavors and spices, the scooping of the tea leaves, the bubbling of the milk and sugar bringing everything together. The recipe for chai is described within the story, and the pair celebrate the simple pleasure of the first sip and the moment of calm brought on by it while everyone else is coming and going at the station. This book makes you nostalgic for that cup of chai you just had or encourage you to go and make one.
The artwork by Ashley Barron is created with paper collage with digital editing to create a unique experience for the reader. Her ability to create the shapes and swirls of the aromas and steam coming from the cups makes you feel as if you are about to drink the cup of chai yourself. The lively colours with contrasting details make the pictures pop and create the feeling you are with the characters at the bustling train station in India. Chaiwala! is a delightful read, one rich for all your senses.
