Carey Price: How a First Nations Kid Became a Superstar Goaltender
By the time Carey was 9, he was becoming very skilled at hockey. It was becoming clear that Carey had something special. And he was willing to work hard at it. Carey had discovered that he belonged in the net. He loved being a difference-maker in the game. Even more importantly, he was getting really good at it.
Carey Price is the story of how a First Nations boy from northern British Columbia became the best goaltender in Canada. It is a story of hard work and dedication and the results that brought to this gifted young man. It is also an inspiration to other children who dream of playing a professional sport. It is a well-written, exciting story for any child interested in hockey.
The biography includes a useful glossary, a list of Price’s career highlights and an index. In addition to being very well-illustrated with black and white photographs, each of the 16 chapters has highlighted sections which discuss important details relevant to Price’s story.
Price was raised in Anahim Lake in a remote part of British Columbia. The first chapters deal with his youth, his interests and the influences on his life. Big influences were his surroundings and the chance to learn how to skate, but the biggest was Carey’s father, Jerry, who was a goalie. Jerry played in the Western Hockey League and was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, but he never got to play a game in the National Hockey League.
In addition to his talent, Price had a great deal of enthusiasm for hockey and a self-confidence which made him almost unbeatable. One might expect young goalies to be worried until they got used to the game, but this was not the case with Price. His confidence was a quality that helped him succeed.
In addition to writing about Price’s career, Rondina gives many details about the game of hockey and some hockey history. For example, a young player chosen in the NHL Entry Draft is most often sent to play with the team’s minor league team to gain experience. This is necessary because playing in the NHL is much harder and more stressful than playing in the minors. Price went to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. The highlight of his career was in 2014 when he was chosen as one of the goalies for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. Two other goalies were also chosen, but Price played for the whole tournament and helped Canada win the gold medal.
